What Are We Doing?!?

Addy is almost 2 years old (not in this picture)and still takes a binky (mimi) whenever she sleeps. We've been really good about leaving the binky in her crib and not taking it around with us. After our trip to Bear Lake, where she had her binky in the car for a nap, she's been especially clingy to it. We still don't let her take it out of the crib, but there is usually crying involved when we take it out of her mouth to leave in the crib. I knew this day was coming, I just didn't want to deal with the reprocussions.
Let me preface this by saying I felt justified in keeping the binky after 18 months because my pediatrician said as long as it was only while she slept and she wasn't trying to talk with it in, it was okay. Well, for any of you that know Addy, know that talking is definitely NOT a problem. And for those that think it messes with their teeth, I do know a good dentist. There. I feel justified.
Anyway, my sister-in-law Jenni, so kindly agreed to watching Addy on Friday night. We delivered her with her blankies and her mimi. The mimi got misplaced during the course of the night, so they put her to bed without it and put up with 40 minutes of crying until she fell asleep. Well, that was the kick in the pants that I needed to keep going. The next morning I clipped all her binkies and she threw them in the garbage because they were "broken."
But, now on a Sunday afternoon, I'm starting to ask myself, what was I thinking? We've had 2 sleepless nights, no naps, and just wondering how long this will take until she will learn to soothe herself? She just keeps calling out for her mimi, and when I remind her that they are broken at 2am, it doesn't seem to be much consolation. Anyone have any ideas out there? Maybe we should've done this at 18 months...live and learn.
Please tell me that she will have adjusted by this Friday (1 week) because our good friends Dede and Riley are watching Addy while Jonathan does Lotoja and there is no way I'm taking her to them if she's still sleeping like this...help!

  1. That stinks...I'm sorry I have no words of wisdom...although it does make me happy now that Graham never really liked his binky. She's gotta give in soon doesn't she? Don't give up! You can do it!

p.s. Thanks for all of your comments! I love them!

  2. I cut hadleys, I let her have it for another week broken-she would put it in her mouth and pull it out to show me that it was broken. She hated it in her mouth broken and would just resort to holding it during the night-maybe try to give it back to her broken-so that she can relize that she dosnt like it herself-then eventually hadley didnt need to hold it anymore and I threw it away.

  3. I'm so sorry! We had a little trouble with Gretta getting rid of hers, but not much. We actually waited until she was 2 1/2 though, so that may have had something to do with it. We cut the tip off hers and left one on the dresser next to her bed so when she wanted it she had a visual reminder that it was broken. Hope that helps! Good luck!

  4. SOrry that I haven't been through this and so I don't have any advice... but don't worry Addy, we have lots of extra mimis at our house!!! You'll be in good hands :)

  5. My sister once told me of a family that nailed the binky to the wall at a slightly uncomfortable height for their daughter. They said she could have it..it was there on the wall. She got sick of sucking it on the wall and was done with it. I don't know if this will help, but I thought it was pretty creative.

  6. Katie, that's hilarious. Addy is stubborn and persistant. She would find a way to dig it out of the wall. I'm sure I would go in one morning with the binky in her mouth and a hole in the wall. She would have a big smile on her face and say, "I did it!"
