South Africa: Day 4: Business Visits

Day 4 was one of the two days out of the whole trip that was actually "MBA-related."  The American Chamber of Commerce was the first of 4 business visits.

It was in a very high-end suburban part of Johannesburg.  They told us that the president of South Africa lived in the area as well as Nelson Mandela.  They were huge, gorgeous homes that we were told sold for around $300,000.  The American Chamber of Commerce was on this golf course.  Rough.

We met with this great lady (Jonny will have to remind me of her name) who gave great background to how business is going in South Africa post-apartheid.  I found her quite interesting and the only one of the four that I actually listened to rather than pretending to listen, but really was reading my book.

The next visit was AngloAmerican in downtown Johannesburg.  We met in a conference room of the top floor of the neighboring building, also an AngloAmerican building.

They talked all about mining platinum and some new way South Africa is doing integrative reporting.  Other than that, I ate the mints, drank water, and read my book.
